Miltec UV recently supported Our Lady of Perpetual Help Haiti Ministry (OLPH) located in Edgewater, Maryland. OLPH is a program that promotes and maintains a relationship between the communities of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the parish of Ste. Elizabeth d’Hongrie in Perodin, Haiti. Miltec’s generous monetary donation will go directly in helping support their feeding program, teacher’s salaries, new 7th grade classes, school supplies, solar powered lanterns, and repair and maintenance of the solar electrical and satellite internet systems.
This past year OLPH was able to provide $14,500 to cover the costs of lunches for 360 students, 4 days a week. The children were served rice and beans, often supplemented with fresh vegetables from their school garden. Teachers salaries were also increased so that 12-13 teachers were able to receive $140 a month for 8-9 months in pay. New 7th grade classes were also established from a reasonable distance from the main school since the main school did not have room for students after the 6th grade. OLPH was able to fund the startup and support of the new 7th grade class by providing a place to learn, specially trained secondary school teachers, books for 10 subjects, teaching aids, and a school director. Due to OLPH’s support, 83 students enrolled. Many of them had been out of school for several years. The program has also been able to bring the children backpacks, notebooks, and pencils. As Perodin, Haiti is considered a desert, very few people have electricity in their homes. Over the past two years, OLPH has been able to provide “Luci Lights” which are inflatable lanterns with solar panels. This allows the students to do lessons at home during night hours. Lastly, OLPH supports the repair and maintenance of solar electrical and satellite internet systems. This is essential for the progress of the school and outside communications.
Overall, OLPH supports on-going projects to support those in Perodin, Haiti. OLPH relies on the support of its parish members and welcomes donations from anyone in the community. Donations can be made by calling OLPH at 443-203-1002 or visiting their website: www.olph.net
